Crazy Rich Asians directed Jon M. Chu signed on to direct Wicked in February 2021. A big part of me just can't like Wicked on-concept, partially because the original Wizard of Oz's setting is so imaginative and bizarre as a world that the very idea of there being any sort of traditional school there just seems laughable.
It's not at all what I came here for. Like, Oz is a gilded, fantastical, nightmare. They have guys that are half-bicycle that exist to cause mayhem. They're surrounded by a desert of sand that turns anything that touches it into more sand. They have wandering, evil wizards that exist only to inflict horrible fates on unsuspecting people, like what happened to the Tin Man.
I just don't see the value in taking this unique realm of fantasy that still manages to be incredibly pertinent and applicable to our everyday lives and hackneying it into another "One Tree Hill" teen drama.
Imagine if The Phantom Tollbooth had a prequel play where they revealed the reason The Mathemagician and King Azaz didn't like each other was because of an argument in high school they had over a girl they both wanted to date.
