Why You'll Love These Overnight Oats!

Creamy overnight oats are one of my favorite go-to breakfasts. I love to whip up a batch before bed and have a delicious breakfast waiting for me the next morning.

If you need an overnight oats recipe that does not have any yogurt or dairy this is the recipe for you! The chia seeds help make this recipe a creamier texture than just the oats and milk alone.

The best part about this make-ahead breakfast is the variety of flavor options! You can really build this to your personal preference by adding your milk of choice, fresh fruit and spices.

Equipment Needed

mason jars- or other individual serving containers with a tight fitting lid.

Key Ingredients

old-fashioned oats- or rolled oats are the best choice for overnight oats. Instant oats are more processed so they can get too soft when soaked for more than a day. Also steel-cut oats are less processed and need to be cooked for them to be soft enough for overnight oats.

milk- I prefer dairy-free milk but any type of milk will work in this recipe.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Add oats, milk, chia seeds, cinnamon and honey to a large mixing bowl. Stir well to mix the chia seeds into the mixture.

Portion the oat mixture into individual servings. Mason jars work perfectly for overnight oats. Make sure that all of the milk is added to the oats.

Add your favorite toppings to the oats. I love berries, nuts and and extra drizzle of honey added to mine.

Substitutions And Additions

milk- any type of milk will work in this recipe. I always have unsweetened almond milk on hand but you can use oat milk, coconut milk, soy milk, cashew milk or any plant-based milk you prefer.

honey- to make this a vegan recipe you can use pure maple syrup, agave syrup or brown sugar instead of honey.

nut butter- I love a swirl of peanut butter or almond butter in my oatmeal so feel free to add a spoonful.

protein powder- To get and extra boost of protein I'll add a scoop of my favorite protein powder to the oat mixture. Make sure to add the powder to the milk first, and check out my protein overnight oats recipe for tips.

Storage Recommendations

Store overnight oats in an airtight container for up to 5 days. I like to portion overnight oats into individual serving containers like mason jars for a quick grab-and-go breakfast.

How Long Are Overnight Oats Good For?

Overnight oats are perfect for meal prep because they stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Can I Use Quick Oats For Overnight Oats?

Quick oats are oats that have gone through more processing than old-fashioned oats so that they cook faster. They will soften quicker so it is best to eat them within 2 days of making them. They may have a bit softer texter and less chew than the old-fashioned oats.

Can You Heat Up Overnight Oats?

Yes! While overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold, I know some people do not care for cold oatmeal. To heat, microwave for 60-90 seconds in a microwave safe dish. Give the hot oatmeal a good stir and add your toppings.

Can You Freeze Overnight Oats?

Yes! Overnight oats can be frozen. If you prefer fresh berries freeze just the oat mixture and add the berries and other toppings after the overnight oats thaw.

To thaw remove from the freezer the night before and let thaw in the refrigerator. For best results freeze right after prepping the oats and they will soak while defrosting.
